Molecular Survey of Pathogens in Wild Amazon Parrot Nestlings: Implications for Conservation

چکیده
South America presents the greatest Psittacidae diversity in world, but also has highest numbers of threatened parrot species. Recently, exotic viruses have been detected captive native psittacine birds Brazil, however, their impacts on health wild parrots are still unknown. We evaluated presence Chlamydia psittaci, Psittacid alphaherpesvirus 1 (PsHV-1), avipoxvirus and beak feather disease virus (BFDV) Amazona aestiva, A. brasiliensis pretrei nestlings caught aestiva seized from illegal trade. Samples were collected 205 90 trade pathogen-specific PCR was performed for each sample. DNA prevalence 4.7% 2.5% sampled wild. Sequencing revealed that C. psittaci sample belonged to genotype PsHV-1, BFDV not detected. These results conservation implications since they suggest populations a low selected pathogens and, apparently, reached by BFDV. Stricter protocols should be established as condition reintroduction guarantee protection Neotropical parrots.

Survey of pathogens in threatened wild red-tailed Amazon parrot (Amazona brasiliensis) nestlings in Rasa Island, Brazil
The red-tailed Amazon parrot (Amazona brasiliensis) is a threatened species of psittacine bird that inhabit coastal regions of Brazil. In view of the threat of this species, the aim of this study was to perform a health evaluation in wild nestlings in Rasa Island, determining the prevalence of enterobacteria and infectious agents according to type of nest. Blood samples were collected from 64 b...
متن کاملMolecular Systematics of the Cape Parrot (Poicephalus robustus): Implications for Taxonomy and Conservation
The taxonomic position of the Cape Parrot (Poicephalus robustus robustus) has been the focus of much debate. A number of authors suggest that the Cape Parrot should be viewed as a distinct species separate from the other two P. robustus subspecies (P. r. fuscicollis and P. r. suahelicus). These recommendations were based on morphological, ecological, and behavioural assessments. In this study w...
متن کاملGenetic variability in three Amazon parrot species.
Parrots of the genus Amazona are among the most threatened species of the Order Pscittaciformes. This work describes allozyme polymorphisms in three Amazon parrot species--the Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva), the Orange-winged Amazon (Amazona amazonica), and the Festive Amazon (Amazona festiva) -, and provides useful data for the evaluation of their genetic variability. We electrophoretic...
متن کاملLimited Geographic Variation in the Vocalizations of the Endangered Thick-billed Parrot: Implications for Conservation Strategies.
The populations of many species are declining worldwide, and conservation efforts struggle to keep pace with extinction rates. Conservation biologists commonly employ strategies such as translocation and reintroduction, which move individuals of endangered species from one part of their range to another. Because individuals from endangered populations are nonexpendable, identifying any potentia...
متن کاملMolecular approaches for detection and identification of foodborne pathogens
Foodborne pathogens comprise microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and parasites that can be transmitted by food and affect public health worldwide. The most common viruses transmitted via food are hepatitis A virus and Norwalk-like caliciviruses. Also, the most common bacteria involved in foodborne illnesses are Campylobacter jejuni, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp, Escherichia...
